Origins of Sex On The Beach Cocktail
'Nobody likes a know it all' goes the saying, but if you want to really impress your guests then you also need to know the history of your cocktail. The Sex On The Beach originated in late 1980's America, supposedly by a bartender named Ted Pizio who worked at Confetti's Bar in Florida. The story goes that he was challenged to sell the most peach schnapps in the area as part of a promotion for the new liqueur and came up with the Sex On The Beach cocktail to sell more. He chose the name based on the reasons he believed tourists (particularly spring-breakers) visited the area. However, there is some evidence and debate of the drink existing a few years earlier than this.
What is in a Sex On The Beach Drink?
A Sex On The Beach in its most basic form consists of two spirits and two fruit juices: Vodka, Peach Schnapps, Orange juice and Cranberry juice. The vodka provides the alcoholic strength without affecting these simple flavours and the peach schnapps provides a lovely unique fruity taste. The juices add more layers of summer fruit, and help to lengthen the drink so it's an easy drinker rather than a short sipper - just what you need in the sun. The sweetness from the orange balances perfectly with the dryness of the cranberries.
The exact ratios are up for debate and personal preference. Using more modern techniques and ingredients such as syrups and bitters, it's also possible to enhance these flavours further without taking away from the taste of the original. This is what we have done with our Sex On The Beach Premixed Cocktail. As the ingredients are easily mixed, you don't even need to use a cocktail shaker, which makes this cocktail perfect for making bulk batches in a pitcher.
When to Have a Sex On The Beach?
The real question is when is a bad time to have one? A Sex On The Beach cocktail is perfect literally anytime the sun is shining and the mood is good. BBQ's and summer parties all call for a Sex On The Beach.
Serving for a Large Group
To make a large pitcher of a Sex On The Beach you'll need:
- 1x 70cl bottle of Vodka. We recommend FRIS vodka.
- 1x 70cl bottle of Peach Schnapps.
- 2x 1L carton of Orange juice. (make sure to use a good quality not from concentrate)
- 2x 1L carton of Cranberry juice.
- A large pitcher or dispensing tank (minimum of 6L)
- Lots of ice
- Orange slices and maraschino cherries (to garnish)
Pour everything (except the garnish and ice) into your mixing jug of choice. Give it all a stir and then when you're ready, serve over plenty of ice with your orange slices and cherry to garnish. It's as simple as that.
Having friends or family that don't want to drink alcohol? Try using some peach puree and your favourite non-alcoholic spirit instead!
